Elvis's Throne

Okay. I was perusing yesterday's local newspaper, and the little blurb at the top of the page said "Historic Local Business could be closing", see article page B-5.  So, being curious, I turned to the appropriate page and read about a plumbing company that was facing closure if they didn't get additional new contracts to keep going.  They have been in business for 70-plus years.  Alright, you may be saying, What makes them historic?  I too wondered until I read (and I quote) "If it happens (closure) it's a tough break for the historic business, which built the first soft vinyl toilet seat in the world in 1975, manufactured the toilet seats NASA used in its space shuttles and made the toilet seat Elvis Presley died on." 
  I cracked up.  I snorted and laughed out loud.  Not at Elvis dying on the throne, but, tactless as it may have been - they missed a great advertising opportunity.   (Let your imagination run wild.)

Happy V. Day!!

Hi All.  I've really been struggling to get back on this blog.  Just didn't seem to have any initiative to do it. I finally decided just to make myself get back to it.  Especially since I have (what I consider) a few interesting tidbits.
FIRST, and foremost, since this is Valentines Day - A shout-out to my sweetie.  Love ya!  (And I hope everyone has a good one!)
On this date in 1918, the very first Tarzan movie (silent- of course) was released.  It starred Elmo Lincoln and was filmed in Morgan City, LA.
I heard this morning of the passing of Ralph Waite.  Most folks will remember him as Papa Walton, but in more recent years he has played Special Agent Jethro Gibb's father on NCIS.
It may be hard to believe, but MSU starts their baseball season today at 6:30, but the opponent has changed from Hofsta to Western Carolina.  Hofstra (out of New Jersey) decided it was too dangerous to travel due to the severe winter storms in the northeast.  So the Dogs reached out to the Catamounts - and they said "Sure! Let's play".  So there will be baseball this weekend.  Thanks for comin' Cats!
Depending on which pre-season College Baseball Poll you look at, the Bulldogs have been ranked as high as #2 and as low as #9.  That's the reason for a record number of season tickets being sold.  Expectations are obviously high for a team that reached the National Championship game last season (losing to Champ UCLA) and return all but a couple of players from that unit.  GO DOGS!

My Childhood is Fadin' Fast

The Professor and Gilligan

I grew up, most definitely, a child of the TV generation. So a lot of my memories are tied to past TV shows.  This week 2 well known characters passed.  I read this morning of the passing of Russell Johnson at age 89.  Better known to most of the world as "The Professor" on "Gilligan's Island".  With his passing, the number of survivors from G.I. is down to two, Dawn (Mary Ann) Wells and Tina Louise (Ginger).  I can honestly say that I saw every episode that ever aired, most more than once.  One of my vivid childhood memories, concerns Gilligan's Island.  To set it up, I was growing up with a black and white TV in my home.  Color TVs and color programs were still a very new thing.  Anyway.... I was in the back seat of the family car and my mother was driving.  We stopped at a red light in front of Spot Cash Furniture, which was located (in the 1960's) at the corner of Lafayette and Washington Streets in Starkville.  I glanced over at the color TVs displayed in their window and then had (what my Mama described as) a "conniption fit" by bouncing up and down and yelling, "Gilligan wears a red shirt! Gilligan wears a red shirt!".  But in my defense, I was a young boy and had never seen the program in color.
Also passing this week, from a program that was popular later in my life, was Dave Madden.  More widely known as Reuben Kincaid, the manager of  "The Partridge Family".  Not only a popular TV show, it produced several albums and chart topping songs in the early 70's.
Now, not particularly a part of my childhood (though for some reason CBS ran the movie once a year for several years during the 60's) was "The Wizard of Oz". This passing just kind of makes you go "Awwww."  Ruth Duccini passed at the age of 95.  Ruth was once of the munchkins we saw when Dorothy arrived in Oz.  With her passing, the number is down to ONE.  Jerry Maren (93) is the last surviving munchkin.
One last thing, Mississippi State was successful in the 2013 Liberty Bowl.  I will admit to being a little worried in the very beginning as Rice scored first and took a 7-0 lead. (But I think they just made the Bulldogs mad.) It was 7-7 at the end of the first quarter, but the rest of the game was pretty much all Dogs.  They pretty much just chewed up the Owls en route to a 44-7 MSU victory.

Before I break............

........for the holidays.  Thought I'd share a couple of thoughts.
Last night my two (grown) sons and I had a little "guy time" together and went to see Mississippi State's basketball team play the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University (don't laugh - they made it to the "Sweet Sixteen" last year).  The Bulldogs ended up winning by 13 (66-53), and except for one "monster jam", neither team was really impressive.  That said, however, State is 8-2 going into the holiday break (next game is Jan. 2nd) and this from a team that only won 10 games total last year.  But the purpose of our attendance was to enjoy our time together before everyone headed back to their respective homes, and that was accomplished.  I enjoyed sitting between my two boys and yelling for the dogs.  Took me back twenty years or so.
Don't know about other states, but Mississippi gets federal money to put more patrolmen on the roadways to ensure safe driving.  But wherever you are, be careful, drive safe and keep a lookout for others that aren't.  Happy holidays to all!
One last thing - MSU is playing Rice in the Liberty Bowl.  (3 PM (cst) on ESPN, Dec. 31st).  More on this next time.  TTFN!

You can't spell Fumble without U M !

Wow!  After winning a "must win" game against Arkansas (on Nov. 23rd) in overtime, MSU did it again against Ole Miss on Thanksgiving night.  This was an historic "Egg Bowl" for several reasons.  First, Dan Mullen became only the second MSU coach to win 4 of his first 5 games against Ole Miss. (The other being Allyn McKeen beginning in 1939).  Second, this was the first time in "Egg Bowl" history that a game went to overtime.  Third, this is the first time in MSU history that they are bowl eligible 4 years in a row. (Click here for ESPN video highlights.) Three possible bowls are being speculated on for the Bulldogs, but most folks making bowl predictions are saying they will play in the BBVA Compass Bowl (on January 4th) against Rutgers.  This prediction comes with a caveat though.  Rutgers is currently 5-6 and must defeat the USF Bulls (2-9) on December 7th to become bowl eligible.
